SAVANNAH'S BARS HAVE NEVER BEEN VERY GOOD AT STAYING IN THE PRESENT.

In Savannah, nightlife has a habit of occupying old buildings. Old buildings have a habit of collecting stories. After a few generations, the distinction between “historic tavern” and “place where somebody swears a dead person moved the glass” can become pleasantly unstable.

Some Savannah bars have famous supernatural reputations. Others sit inside buildings with haunted lore. Some are simply terrific local drinking places woven into the streets, stories, and evenings that make the city worth exploring.

We like all three categories.

START WITH BARS THAT BELONG TO THE CITY AROUND THEM.

These aren't rankings, and they aren't the only places worth drinking in Savannah. They are four very different establishments that fit naturally into a night of history, ghosts, stories, and wandering downtown.

If you want Savannah's haunted-bar idea in one building, 17Hundred90 makes a persuasive case.

It is an inn, restaurant, and tavern occupying a genuinely historic property near Columbia Square, with a supernatural reputation that has become part of Savannah ghost lore.

The most famous story involves a woman commonly called Anna and a doomed romance whose details have changed considerably depending on who has been telling the story and in which century. Other tales have accumulated around the inn as well.

That uncertainty is part of what makes the place interesting. There is history here, there is folklore here, and there are enough versions of the legend to remind us that human beings were crowdsourcing stories long before the internet arrived.

Tandem is small, stylish without being fussy, and tucked into the first floor of East Bay Inn on East Bay Street.

The inn itself dates to the nineteenth century and has its own long-running ghost reputation, including stories about a figure often called Charlie.

Downstairs, meanwhile, Tandem is busy making coffee drinks, cocktails, wine, beer, and the stronger argument that an old haunted hotel deserves a very civilized bar.

McDonough's belongs on this page for a slightly different reason.

We aren't going to invent a Victorian widow simply because the page title says “haunted bars.” McDonough's is interesting because it is alive. Very alive, especially once karaoke begins.

This longtime downtown bar has spent decades becoming part of Savannah's social life. Locals, visitors, hospitality workers, political creatures, singers of widely variable talent, and people whose evening has developed unexpected momentum all eventually seem capable of passing through.

It has appeared on Mad Cat routes over the years, and it remains one of those places that works because it feels connected to the actual city rather than staged beside it.

Mint To Be is a different flavor of Savannah nightlife: bright drinks, Latin American bites, a friendly room, and Wright Square right outside the larger neighborhood around it.

There is also La Aparicion, the speakeasy tucked inside the operation — because apparently simply operating a mojito bar was not sufficiently entertaining.
